IN HER WARDROBE

Genevieve Smart

Friday 11th Jul 2014

Back in 2002, Genevieve Smart and her sister Alexandra started that wonderful Australian fashion and lifestyle brand, Ginger&Smart.

Known for its distinctive, individual take on style, it is now held fondly in the hearts (and wardrobes) of many a well-dressed woman.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have to admit that I’ve been friends with Genevieve for a long (long) time… But because of this, I can attest to the fact that apart from being really stylish, super talented and terribly clever, she is also heaps of fun.

And I think it’s this sense of cheeky, fun that really resonates with their collections – a spirited confidence that draws you in and makes you want to hang around (and dance… and drink cocktails…)

Want to take a little peek inside her wardrobe?

Follow the link below for the interview and all the pics…

5 words to describe my style are… I’m a Libran, so my style always balances the femme with the masculine. I’m quite boyish but always in luxe fabrics. I love a red lip too.

I became a fashion designer because… I loved the semiotics of Fashion. It’s a language that can communicate more about us than just words.

My go-to outfit is… leather trousers, a silk blouse and a boyish blazer.

On the top of my wish list is… the MPNT rose gold ear cuffs that we designed for our show. I’m looking forward to their arrival in store soon.

The best (fashion) lesson I’ve learnt is… always keep it chic.

My most recent fashion purchase is… my Celine D’Orsay pumps in sapphire blue

I keep buying more… perfume and red lipstick. Every time I travel I buy a new perfume and wear it on the trip. It’s part of my travel ritual and always leaves me with a lovely memory of where I‘ve been.

I need more… relaxed pieces. I slip into our Ginger&Smart slouchy silk trousers and knits as soon as I walk in the door from work and I never seem to have enough.

I wish I’d never bought… the Proenza Schouler flat buckled sandals in white leather. They look fabulous but only if I have them professionally cleaned after every wear.

If I could only keep 3 things in my wardrobe, they would be… some Hinoki by Comme des Garcons perfume, leather trousers and my Hermès watch.

My favourite labels are…
adidas by Stella McCartney for training. I just can’t get motivated to train in an old teeshirt.
Mother for their boyfriend jeans – a great cut and the perfect wash.
Kiki De Montparnasse lingerie – I love their unstructured pieces in fine navy lace.
– Celine for shoes
– And of course Ginger&Smart keeps my wardrobe stocked for everything else I need.

My favourite online shops are…
– mytheresa.com
– Barneys New York
– Net a Porter
– and Mr Porter for my husband, Aidan.

I always feel happy when I wear… natural fibres. I cant cope with polyester.

Any outfit looks better with… great skin.

My career highlight to date is… hopefully still to come but when we do our collection showings in New York or Paris, it feels good.
