The Trench Coat was originally designed for the British Army (for use in the trenches – go figure).
Its former life in the military is still evident with its epaulettes, wide lapels, storm flaps and button-close pockets, but fashion has taken liberties with pretty much everything else about this ‘classic’, experimenting with colours, fabrics, crops and trims.
My favourite interpretation would have to be the ’soft trench’ – kind of like the stylish love-child of a trench coat and a duster jacket, with its drapey fabrics and more relaxed fit that makes it the perfect coverup for these tricky in-between seasons (read: it’s sunny and warm… then it gets cloudy… then it rains… and then the sun comes out again…)
