1. Exfoliation
Exfoliation is the key to an even tan.
Start by using a body scrub in the shower and gently rub with a mitt, paying special attention to rough areas such as the knees and elbows. Weekly exfoliation helps to rid the skin of its top dead layers and leaves you with lovely soft skin.
For a natural alternative, I love using coconut instead of a scrub. Try applying it in the shower when your skin is warm and then pat dry. This amazing oil provides just that little bit more moisture which is perfect just before you apply a tan to your body.
2. Hydration
One of the most important components for a long lasting tan is moisture!
Summer brings more humidity, so for the most part your skin is plump and full of vitamin D but having hot showers and also swimming in salt water or chlorine pools will remove moisture from your skin.
To combat this, replenish your body with natural oils. One product that I can’t live without is Goe Oil. This amazing multipurpose product will hydrate your skin, lips, cuticles and hair. It absorbs really quickly, nourishes your skin and leaves you looking refreshed and revitalised.
Pay special attention to the elbows, knees, heels and toes as I find these areas often need extra hydration. By applying Goe Oil on these areas first before applying the tan, you’ll get a smooth, moisturised finish that helps blend your fake tan better, eliminating any dark, patchy spots.
3. Just Keep Blending
Now its time for you to apply your fake tan.
My favourite is Beauty Department Summer Tan – it smells so good, is Paraben fee and is so easy to apply, leaving your skin with the loveliest, natural tan.
Using this product sparingly (a little bit goes a long way), start with your face and gently blend down your neck, using the heat of your hands to help blend the product,
Now work your way down the body, leaving your hands and feet till last.
If you’re feeling a little nervous self-tanning for the first (or second or third!) time, then apply another layer of moisturiser over the tan. Your skin can never be too hydrated and it will also help the colour blend out.
Once finished, it’s important to wash your hands and clean your fingernails with a wipe to avoid any staining.
4. Perfect Combination
Regularly moisturise your face and body as this will help to enhance the colour of your tan and prolong fading.
Taking care of your skin is crucial to ensuring your tan looks its best. I believe that using products with natural and organic ingredients will always give you the best result.
