I love the ‘borrow from your boyfriend’ style of dressing – think crisp white cotton shirts, boyfriend jeans, and tailored suiting.

But what I’m liking even more is the reinterpretation of this re-appropriation.

Confused?

It’s a case of girl-meets-boy-meets-girl, with those much loved silhouettes now popping up in bright, colourful, girly prints.

Case in point: Today’s fab tailored ‘Wild Gypsy’ print jacket and matching pants from Fleur Wood.

Fiona Kowalski is the warm, funny, super-stylish founder of children’s clothing label Printebebe (pronounced print baby) – an adorable collection printed smock dresses, blouses and bloomers.

Her career has seen her travel full-circle, starting out as a designer then moving into the role of fashion editor and stylist for many years in Hong Kong, New Zealand, London and Australia. It was the birth of her daughter Gidget (now 2) however, that inspired her move back into designing.

“I started Printebebe because I wanted to create affordable children’s clothing that was pretty and easy to wear. It has been fun, more hard work than I ever imagined, but so rewarding too”.

This matching top and pants combo is like the perfect jumpsuit (only a whole lot easier for toilet breaks). And you can get so much extra milage wearing them as separates as well.

It just makes good fashion-sense*, yes?

I love a cropped pant. Fashion designers call these a 7/8 pant (no science here – they’re just that little bit longer than a 3/4 pant). They look really great and are so versatile, working equally well with heels as they do with flats and sneakers (no frantic, running out the door, last minute hem adjustments required).

The trick to pulling this off though (and not looking dumpy) is all about proportions.

Your pants must be a straight and slim (but not too tight) cut, so that the diameter of the hem on your pant is around half the length of your shoes (hence narrower hems work better with heels). The crop also needs to allow around a 5cm gap from the bottom of your pant hem to the top of your shoes, for that perfect pant to exposed-ankle ratio.
